5 Tips for Dyslexic Students to Enhance their Academic Performance

Posted by Dr. Patrick Vincent-Pope | Oct 16, 2023 | 0 Comments

If you are a student struggling with dyslexia, you are not alone. Experts believe dyslexia affects as many as 20 percent of the population. A common learning difficulty that affects reading and writing skills, dyslexia can present some unique challenges in your academic journey, but remember that dyslexia does not reflect your potential. In fact, many successful individuals from various fields have been diagnosed with dyslexia.

For dyslexic students, the issue is not intelligence; it has more to do with how your brain interprets input and, therefore, how you learn compared with others. Much of the disconnect comes from the fact that conventional school learning processes do not take dyslexia into account. Thus, the way to do better is to adopt ways of learning that are more suited to how your brain works. The following five tips will help you do just that.

1. Embrace Multisensory Learning Techniques

Multisensory learning techniques engage more than one sense at a time, which can be particularly beneficial for dyslexic learners. These techniques involve visual, auditory, kinesthetic (movement), and tactile (touch) experiences in the learning process. For instance, while learning spellings, one could write in sand or trace letters in the air to engage touch, movement, and vision.

2. Use Assistive Technology

There are numerous assistive technologies available that can support dyslexic students in their learning. Tools like text-to-speech and speech-to-text software can help in reading and writing tasks. Similarly, digital note-taking applications can assist in organizing thoughts and information.

3. Develop a Structured Study Routine

Having a structured study routine can provide a sense of predictability and control, reducing anxiety around studying. Break tasks into manageable chunks, take regular breaks and ensure a quiet and organized study space.

4. Practice Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a visual technique for structuring information, helping you better analyze, comprehend, synthesize, recall, and generate new ideas. This technique can be particularly helpful for dyslexic students with strong visual thinking skills.

5. Seek Support and Guidance when Needed

Remember, it is okay to seek help. Schools are required to make accommodations for students diagnosed with dyslexia, including creating IEP or 504 plans for them. Take advantage of these benefits, as they will make your academic journey easier. When you are struggling with a specific task or assignment—or with school in general—ask a teacher for help. Better still, get help from a tutor.

Understanding dyslexia and how it affects learning is the first step towards developing effective strategies to cope with it. These tips are meant to provide a starting point, but remember that everyone is unique. What works best will vary from student to student.
