How Many AP Classes Are Ideal for College Acceptance?

Posted by Dr. Patrick Vincent-Pope | Apr 01, 2025 | 0 Comments

As a high school student seeking acceptance into college, Advanced Placement (AP) classes afford an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself academically while also looking better on college applications. AP classes allow you to earn college credit while still in high school, giving you a head start on your education and showing admissions officers that you are ready to handle rigorous coursework.

But how many AP classes are ideal for college acceptance? The answer depends on the type of college you are aiming for. For higher ranked, more selective colleges and universities, the more AP courses you complete, the better you look to them. If you are not aiming for the top of the top, you can boost your chances of acceptance with a more modest number.

How Many Should I Take?

While there is no "magic number" of AP classes to guarantee admission, colleges value students who balance ambition with academic success. Different schools have varying expectations:

  • Ivy League Schools: To remain competitive at the most elite institutions, aim for 8-12 AP classesover your four years of high school.
  • Top 20 Nationally Ranked Schools: Typically, these schools expect you to complete 6-8 AP courses.
  • Top 100 Colleges and Universities: For strong consideration, plan for 4-5 AP classes.
  • Other Colleges: Try for at least 1-2 AP courses for the best chance of acceptance.

A Word of Caution

Keep in mind that AP classes are just one piece of your college application. Admissions officers also evaluate your GPA, essays, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and overall course rigor. While taking numerous AP classes can boost your college appeal, overloading your schedule can backfire. If your GPA suffers or your stress levels skyrocket, admissions committees will take note—and not in a good way.

If you are aiming for top-tier schools, completing numerous AP courses without compromising your other academics requires a strategic approach. We recommend taking AP classes in the subjects you are passionate about and focusing on efficiency. For most students, the majority of AP classes should be taken during junior year, when colleges weigh academic performance most heavily. This way, you will have strong grades and enough time to prepare for exams without overwhelming your workload. That said, keep things in perspective: excelling in fewer AP classes is better than struggling in many.
