How to Handle Distractions when Studying Online

Posted by Dr. Patrick Vincent-Pope | Feb 19, 2024 | 0 Comments

Online learning has become a standard mode of education for many students—and even with in-person classes, the internet is commonly used for studying or completing assignments. However, between the lure of social media, endless notifications of emails and texts, and (quite often) the noise and goings-on in the external environment, many students struggle to stay focused when studying online. If these distractions are not addressed, the student may fall behind, and their grades may begin to suffer. What can you do to make use of online resources without losing focus?

Identify What Distracts You

Different people are distracted by different things, and some people are more easily distracted than others. What grabs your attention when you are trying to study? Is it social media alerts? Interesting ads on web pages? Other conversations happening in the room? When you understand what specifically diverts your attention, you can take action to overcome those distractions and recover your focus.

Helpful Strategies to Handle Distractions

Once you have identified your distractions, it is time to put strategies into place to manage them. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Establish a dedicated study area. While you can open a laptop anywhere that WiFi is available, a noisy coffee shop may not be the best place for you to study—especially if you are prone to eavesdropping or other noise. Select a quiet, comfortable space in your home that is free from the daily movements of family life. This area should be solely for studying, which will help your brain associate it with focus and learning.

  • Use apps to reduce online distractions. Try using a focus app such as Freedom or Cold Turkey. These apps are designed to block you from social media and other distracting sites during study times so you can focus on your studies without interruption.

  • Create a realistic study schedule. Establish set times (not too long) to study, and incorporate short, regular breaks to avoid burnout and maintain concentration. During these breaks, step away from your study area to rejuvenate your mind. Ask family members not to interrupt you during these times (and if needed, ask friends not to text you during these times, either).

Managing distractions during online study requires a combination of self-discipline and practical strategies. By creating an environment conducive to studying, using digital tools to limit distractions, and establishing a consistent study routine, you can improve your focus and learning efficiency. Remember, the key is to recognize what distracts you and tackle it directly. Implementing these strategies can make your online learning experience more beneficial and less stressful, setting the stage for academic success.
