Passing American Graduate School Tests: A Guide for Non-Native English Speakers

Posted by Dr. Patrick Vincent-Pope | Nov 15, 2024 | 0 Comments

Applying to graduate programs in the United States is a challenging process on its own—but it can be especially so if English is not your first language. Tests like the GRE, GMAT, or LSAT are not just about your knowledge; they also assess your ability to understand and respond to complex questions in English. What might seem like a straightforward question to a native speaker can become confusing or time-consuming for someone still learning the language. In some cases, you may be allowed to bring a dictionary, but translation software is usually not permitted—and even translating words will not necessarily help you understand the meaning of a sentence (or write down good answers). These barriers are real, but with the right strategies, you can tackle them effectively. Here are a few tips to help you succeed.

Study and Take Practice Tests

Spending time with practice tests and questions will help you become more comfortable with the test structure and the types of questions you will see. U.S. graduate tests often use the same types of vocabulary, so learning these words in advance can be helpful. You could make flashcards or use an app to practice these words. Knowing what to expect will help you feel more prepared on test day.

Use Context to Find the Meaning

Sometimes, you may not understand every word in a question or reading passage, but you may be able to figure it out by looking for clues in the surrounding text. For example, the sentence before or after can often help you understand the main idea. Try to identify important keywords that can give you a basic idea, even if you do not understand everything. This skill is especially useful in reading sections, where understanding the general meaning is more important than knowing every detail.

Get Help from a Personal Tutor

A personal tutor can be a great help if you are not yet comfortable with English. An experienced tutor will understand your challenges and help you practice reading, understanding questions, and finding the best answers. They can also teach you test-taking strategies that match your needs. Tutoring is a good investment, as it gives you personal help to strengthen your skills and build confidence.

The pressure to perform well can seem overwhelming, but you are not alone in facing these hurdles. Many non-native English speakers have successfully taken these tests, and so can you. At Vincent-Pope Tutoring, our tutors are highly trained to help students with any challenges they may face, including overcoming language barriers. Contact our office for more information.
