Test-Taking Time Management: Common Pitfalls and Effective Strategies

Posted by Dr. Patrick Vincent-Pope | Aug 15, 2024 | 0 Comments

Exams are perhaps the most stressful part of school. Not only are you being challenged to recall what you have learned, but a huge part of your grade is to be determined within a relatively short time span. With that said, few things can be as demoralizing as running out the clock before you have time to finish.

Proper time management during a test can mean the difference between achieving a high score and falling short. Let us discuss some of the common reasons students struggle with time management at exam time--and what you can do to turn things around.

Common Time Management Challenges During Tests and Why They Happen

If you struggle with time management when taking tests, you are not alone. This is a common problem with students--and most of the time, it occurs due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Underestimating Question Complexity: Students often spend too much time on difficult questions, leaving insufficient time for easier ones.

  • Poor Time Allocation: Failing to distribute time evenly across sections can lead to unfinished portions of the test.

  • Spending Too Much Time Reviewing: Excessive reviewing of answers (i.e., "second-guessing") can eat up valuable time.

  • Panic: Similar to a deer in headlights, many students experience panic at some point in the exam, causing them to "freeze" and waste valuable minutes.

  • Insufficient Preparation: A lack of familiarity with the material can lead to disorientation during the test and difficulty in recalling information.

  • Overconfidence: Assuming that certain sections will be easy can result in inadequate time allocation for those that are more challenging.

How to Improve Your Test-Taking Time Management

As with any challenge, learning better time management skills comes down to strategy, both before and during the test. Consider doing the following:

Prepare in Advance

Good time management during the test actually begins when you're studying. Allocate ample time to study the material covered on the test. Study in manageable segments of time with plenty of rest breaks sprinkled in. Being prepared will build confidence and help you get through the entire test more efficiently, often with time to spare.

Take Mock Exams

Many standardized tests have "practice tests" available. Try taking a few of these mock exams under timed conditions to simulate the actual test environment. This practice will help you become accustomed to the pressure of managing your time effectively.

Prioritization Techniques

At test time, look over the entire test briefly and prioritize questions based on their point value and difficulty level. Tackle easier questions first to secure quick points and build confidence before moving on to more challenging ones.
